The Nikon Small World Photography And Video Competition first began in 1975 as a means to recognize and applaud the efforts of those involved with photography through the light microscope.
Since then, Small World has become a leading showcase for photomicrographers from the widest array of scientific disciplines.
Competitions Details
Nikon Small World is the world’s preeminent photographic competition for images TAKEN THROUGH THE MICROSCOPE. It is comprised of 2 separate contests:
- Nikon Small World: is for STILL images taken through a microscope
- Nikon Small World in Motion: s for movies, time-lapse movies also taken through a light microscope.
You can enter 3 still images in Nikon Small World and 3 movies in the Nikon Small World in Motion Competition.
During the Competition Entry Period, visit www.nikonsmallworld.com:
(a) Follow the links and instructions to complete the Competition entry form ,
(b) Upload up to three (3) photomicrographic digital images or three photomicrographic videos taken by the Entrant to the Entry Form.
- Images must be submitted in .jpeg, .png, or .tiff format.
- Videos must be submitted in .mp4, .mpg, .wmv, .avi, .or .mov format.
- Videos may not exceed sixty (60) seconds.
Who can enter the Photography And Video Competition?
The Nikon Small World Photography And Video Competition is open only to individuals who are at least eighteen (18) years old at the time of entry.

- 1st Prize – USD $3,000
- 2nd Prize – USD $2,000
- 3rd Prize – USD $1,000
- 4th Prize – USD $800
- 5th Prize – USD $600
- 6th Prize – USD $400
- 7th-10th Prizes – USD $300 each
- 11th-20th Prizes – USD $200 each
- Honorable Mentions – USD $100 each. The number of Honorable Mention Prizes will be determined by the Judges in their sole discretion.

- 1st Prize: $3,000
- 2nd Prize: $2,000
