The value of your Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award is proportional to your financial need. Your award may be renewed for up to three additional years of undergraduate study or to degree completion – whichever comes first – provided you achieve satisfactory academic standing in your faculty, continue to demonstrate financial need, and maintain your Canadian study permit (student visa)

Scholarship Application Eligibility

To be considered for the Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award:

  • You must be an international student who will be studying in Canada on a Canadian study permit.
  • You must be entering UBC from a recognized secondary school, or transferring from your first year at a post-secondary college or other university.
  • You must have graduated from high school no earlier than the month of June two years prior to the academic year you are applying to. For example, applicants for 2022 must have graduated from high school no earlier than June 2020.
  • You must be applying for your first undergraduate degree.
  • You must meet UBC’s admission requirements, including general and degree-specific requirements and the English Language Admission Standard.
  • You must demonstrate superior academic achievement (achieve all As or equivalent standard).
  • You must demonstrate a level of financial need that would otherwise prevent you from pursuing a UBC degree.

Please note: If you are nominated for a Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award, you will not be considered for merit-based awards, including International Major Entrance Scholarships and Outstanding International Student Awards.

Application Procedures for Karen McKellin undergraduate scholarship 2021

The student must be nominated for the Karen McKellin undergraduate scholarship by a School Guidance Counselor or Educational Officer at the school where the student attended. Hence, the first step is to ensure that the school you have studied at agrees to your candidacy for this Canadian scholarship. 

It should be noted that the school that will nominate you can only nominate 3 students for this scholarship. Thus, you and two other students from your school can be nominated.

The tasks that must be performed by the student can be summarized as follows:

  • The student must choose a teacher or faculty member who taught him before and who can provide an academic reference for him.
  • Send the teacher (referee) details to the candidate (the school that will nominate you). Send the instructor’s details, including name and email address, to your school. The school will need this information to initiate your scholarship application.
  • Apply for one of the undergraduate programs at the University of British Columbia in Canada. While you are waiting for the response to your school’s nomination for you, you can start the Canadian University application process to try to create your own account on the university’s website. Without a username and password, you will not be able to submit a scholarship application.

For the school to help you and nominate you, you must send this document. The document outlines the steps that your school must follow in order to nominate you for this scholarship. Never attempt to apply for the scholarship on your own! Because your application will not be taken into consideration, and the university requires that the scholarship be applied for through your school.
